Why the interest in native plants these days? As all gardeners know, matching the right plant to the right site can be difficult. Plants native to this continent or more specifically the northeast have developed survival strategies over millions of years. You might as well take advantage of this!

Native plants . . .
1. are usually more suited to our hot humid summers
2. usually require less watering once established
3. often require less maintenance
4. often are less interesting to deer
5. help restore natural food and nectar sources for butterflies, hummingbirds
and the ecological web of our particular area
6. plant purchases and choices can be as environmentally important as recycling
or attempting to get better gas mileage
7. help you avoid the worry about unwittingly using invasive plants that destroy habitat

Native blueberries are pollinated by native bumblebees. As the bee hangs off the end of the flower and moves its wings, the pollen falls onto its tummy, before it flies to another flower.
